In 1856, J. G. Bruce, wife (formerly Mary Rawson) and family came from York State, bought the Wm. Rawson (Grout-Green) place, lived there a few years, then moved to Freeport, Ill. for three years, then back to Oregon and bought the Cummins-Baker place west of Oregon where the family lived till 1877, when Mr. Bruce died. Mrs. Bruce died in 1890. Mr. Bruce was a man of enthusiastic nature, was a lover of and participated in martial music; was an active Civil war worker. To Mr. and Mrs. Bruce were born seven children, Frank Harvey and Charles having passed to the beyond, Sarah Leighton, Carrie Dreher, Ben and Bessie Rollins are still living.
