March 1922
- Mrs. C.T. Johnson has gone to Beloit Hospital for treatment of her rheumatism. Her daughter, Miss Ruby Johnson is superintendent of Beloit Hospital.
- The cast of “Hysterical Paraplegia” surprised William Ames at his home last Friday night. They brought their refreshments and covers were laid for 16.
- Mrs. G. L. Booth will entertain the Dorcas Society Thursday afternoon and all the ladies of the congregation and community are invited to attend. It will be the nature of a housewarming and St. Patrick’s party.
- Mrs. August Lythjohan underwent surgery for goiter at the Methodist hospital at Madison last Saturday.
- Miss Cornelia DeJean was a business visitor in Milwaukee the first of the week and while there attended the style show at the Milwaukee Auditorium.
50 YEARS AGO
March 1972
- Bessie Tozer will celebrate her 100th birthday Monday, March 27. Mrs. Tozer was born in Plymouth, England and came to the United States with her husband. They farmed near Oak Hall until 1943 when they retired and moved to the Village. Mr. Tozer died in 1945.
- Mrs. Antonia Besson arrived from Sunnyvale California for an indefinite visit with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Snow and boys, Jimmy and Dennis.
- Members of the 1971-72 basketball team have elected Jon Schroeder as their captain and picked Dan Fosdick as their most valuable player.
- Mrs. Craig Smith and five month old Chantel arrived Sunday from Okinawa. They were met at the Madison airport by the Ronald Erfurths, Oregon. On Monday night Mrs. Smith and Chantel were supper guests at the Maurice Smith home. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Garry Pass and sons of Janesville.
- After more than a half century of active service on the Library Board, Mona Paulson has resigned her post effective March 1. Mrs. Paulson was appointed to the board in 1918 by Andrew Madsen, then Village President. She has served since 1934 as secretary of the group.
- Many activities in progress to lend aid to Jack “Spanky” Swinehart: Oregon high school students are going all out for a cause in which they believe. Senior schoolmate, Jack Swinehart is undergoing intensive experimental treatment for an undiagnosed illness at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda Maryland. Jack has lived most of his life in Oregon. Activities to benefit Jack are: A volleyball marathon; public card party at the Sportsman’s, Jack Swinehart day at Paul’s Supermarket and a benefit dance at the Fitchburg Town Hall.
- Grades at OHS noticeably dropped last semester for the first time since controversial new grading procedures began in 2010. OHS Principal Chris Ligocki said the drop was not unexpected. “We did expect grades would fall slightly as a result of the changeover “ to the new grading system.
- A shed destroyed by fire in December has been rebuilt. The shed fire also destroyed four school buses. The school buses have either been replaced or are ordered. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
- A town of Dunn neighborhood petitioned the Oregon School Board to cede their neighborhood to the McFarland School District. The Oregon School Board denied the request.
- A-Z Farm lambing barn visitors can see newborn lambs as a family or as an individual. There is a chance to witness the birth of a lamb, too. There will be chicks, bunnies and other animals.
- Firefighter of the Year — American Legion Post 160 of Oregon-Brooklyn presented the firefighter of the Year award to Tim Olson who retired from the Oregon Fire Department in late 2011. Olson had been with the Oregon Fire and EMS since 1980 serving in various capacities.

- A number of Oregon High School students represented the school in a mathematics competition. A group of 20 students traveled to Marquette University in Milwaukee to participate in the Milwaukee Area Math Council Ninth Grade Math Meet.
- The Oregon Area Historical Society formed a 12-member committee to plan long-range plans for the society. Volunteers met to talk about specific objectives for the local organization-including space needs, long-term plans and concentrating on future directions. The long-term committee supplements the function of the board members who concentrate on more immediate problems and approaches.
- The Oregon High School staff selected representatives for Badger Boys and Girls State. Selections were made based on the students outstanding leadership, scholarship and participation in co-curricular activities. The students represented OHS at week-long camps on Wisconsin government held at Ripon College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
- Thanks to caring parents, Oregon enforcement officers issued zero citations for child restraint violations during the Safe and Sober campaign. During the campaign, officers were looking for violations of the state child passenger laws.
- Students in the Oregon High School YOU group were busy planning and preparing for the arrival of 10 students and one teacher from their sister school in Chiba City, Japan. Students worked very hard to put together cultural displays, plan welcome activities and coordinate the exchange program.

- A week after the Oregon School District voters shot down a $33 million referendum, district officials say they are “waiting for the dust to settle” before deciding what to do next.
