Hiram Vroman was a pioneer farmer of the town of Fitchburg. He was born in Fitchburg on January 18, 1847.
Hiram Vroman’s mother was Mary (Westrope) Vroman, who was born in 1821 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Mr. Westrope, Mary’s father and Hiram’s grandfather, was a native of Kentucky, who moved to Lafayette County, Wisconsin in 1829. Three years after moving to Wisconsin he died. Mary was the oldest of six children the others being Thomas, Boone, Austin, Lewis, and Ella.
Hiram’s father was Joseph Vroman, born in 1816, in Oneida County, New York. Joseph’s father, and Hiram’s grandfather was Jacob Vroman, of Dutch descent, who moved early in the nineteenth century to Vincennes, Indiana where he died, leaving seven children, John, Charles, George, Joseph, William, Elizabeth and Sarah. In 1836, with his brothers, Joseph walked to Milwaukee. After two winters in the woods, Joseph started farming in Dodgeville.
In 1840, Joseph and Mary Westrope were married and moved to Dane County, where they located on section 20 in the town of Fitchburg. They built a log house , the first structure in Fitchburg.
Joseph and Mary Vroman had five children.
- George W., and engineer on the Northern Pacific railroad, whose home is in North Platte, Nebraska
- Harriet, wife of Isom Sherman of Oneida, New York.
- Emeline, wife of S. D. Moore, Cleveland, Ohio
- Hiram
- William A., a grain dealer in Gothenburg, Nebraska
Hiram Vroman was educated in public schools in Wisconsin and attended University of Wisconsin. He was a Democrat, like his father, Joseph. He served as chairman of the town board for four years and more than 30 years as the district clerk.
On November 13, 1878, Hiram married Mary E., daughter of Boone and Sarah (Evans) Westrope. They had at least 3 children Joseph A., Elmer, and Harry.
