Manuel Wolfe was born in New Market, Upper Canada, in March 1826. When Manuel was 10, his parents moved to Richland County, Ohio where he went to school and later taught school.
In the spring of 1847, Wolf bought 40 acres. He and his parents built a log house. He also taught school in Union in Rock County where he met and married Miss Emma Gifford.
Emma was born and educated in Jefferson County, New York. Her parents first tried Western life in Illinois, where she taught two terms of school. Then they settled in Union, Rock County, in 1848, where she continued teaching.
The Wolfe farm grew to 244 acres. He lived there until 1867 when he moved to the Village of Oregon, while continuing the active management of his farm.
Manuel was a Republican. He was the Chairman of Oregon and town clerk for 7 years, as well as treasurer in 1878. He was a member of the Oregon Lodge No. 151.
Mr. and Mrs. Wolfe had ten living children-Charles H., Charles S., Jennie, Frank P., May E., Josie C., Carrie E., Hattie A., Harold G. and Percy W., all born in Oregon Township, as was Fred. M., who died in infancy.
