Beginning a few years before World War I and continuing until the late 1930’s, cavalry soldiers stationed at Camp Grant, Illinois would pass through Oregon every summer on their way to Camp Douglas, Wisconsin.
John S. Bell, of Brooklyn, was a veteran of the Civil War. He was born in Sussex County, New Jersey on February 9, 1842.
Nathaniel Ames was born in Killingsley, Connecticut on April 25, 1761. He enlisted in the continental service for the campaign of 1779. From the beginning until the end he served in the Revolutionary War. He was stationed at Valley Forge in the cold winter of 1779-80 and frequently saw General
American women played important roles during World War II, both at home and in uniform. Not only did they give their sons, husbands, fathers, and brothers to the war effort, they gave their time, energy, and some even gave their lives. A new display at the Oregon Area Historical Society
Born Ashtabula County, Ohio, son of Gardiner and Fanny Rice. In 1848 his parents came to Oregon, Wisconsin.Age 22, single, a farmer. Enlisted August 14th 1862 Oregon, Wisconsin by J. Bull for three years, mustered in August 30th 1862, Madison, Wisconsin.
Age 30, married, blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’9″, a carpenter.
